What to check
from the ground.
A short walk around the property tells you a lot. Stay off the roof and off ladders. Take photos of anything that looks different than it did last week.
- Roof shinglesMissing, lifted, cracked or bruised shingles, and granules collecting at downspouts.
- FlashingMetal around chimneys, valleys and wall lines that looks bent or loose.
- Roof ventsDented, cracked or displaced vents, caps and pipe boots.
- GuttersDents, separation from the fascia, sagging runs and blockages from debris.
- SidingCracks, holes, chipped paint, loose panels and impact marks on the sunniest walls.
- WindowsDamaged screens, cracked panes, torn seals and water sitting inside the frame.
- Leaks or water intrusionCeiling stains, damp attic sheathing, musty smells after rain.
